Decaying Winter Beginner Guide

Every run alternates between a daytime scavenging phase and a nighttime defense wave. Your team must collect food, medicine, weapons, ammunition, scrap, and defensive supplies before the storm forces everyone back to the safe zone.

1

Learn the Core Controls

Practice movement and melee combat inside the safe zone before taking valuable equipment outside. WASD moves, Shift sprints, Space jumps, E interacts, left mouse uses a light attack or fires, right mouse uses a heavy attack or aims, Q shoves, R reloads, F triggers your perk ability, and 1-5 selects inventory slots.

2

Choose a Simple Team Role

Beginners should focus on one job instead of carrying every item. A scavenger collects supplies, a frontline player controls melee enemies, a ranged player saves ammunition for dangerous targets, and a support player manages healing and crowd control. Survivalist, Lazarus, Hivemind, and Arbiter are forgiving starter perks.

3

Scavenge the Closest Buildings First

Search nearby containers before pushing deeper into the map. Prioritize food and drinks, bandages and medicine, a dependable melee weapon, ammunition and firearms, scrap and crafting materials, then grenades and defensive equipment.

4

Return Before the Storm

The storm ends the scavenging phase and damages players caught outside. Watch the timer, stop opening containers before the final moments, and start moving back while you still have stamina. Waiting until the storm reaches your building is the most common early mistake.

5

Organize the Safe Zone

Place shared ammunition, food, medicine, and spare weapons where teammates can find them. Scrap equipment the team will not use and spend resources on useful crafted weapons, traps, and defenses. A clean safe zone prevents players grabbing the wrong ammunition mid-wave.

6

Defend the Entrance as a Team

Let melee players handle isolated scavengers while ranged players focus gunmen, explosives, and dangerous enemies. Use shoves, perk abilities, traps, and narrow entrances to stop the team being surrounded. Save expensive ammunition for priority targets, not basic melee scavengers.

7

Manage Infection, Hunger, and Morale

Low hunger and thirst reduce your effectiveness, and infection becomes increasingly dangerous as it advances. Use antibiotics before the late stages, treat bleeding with bandages, and splint fractures. A teammate's death grants morale but weakens survivors, so avoid unnecessary solo fights.

8

Follow the First Ten Nights Route

Nights 1-2 gather basics, Nights 3-4 establish roles and ammunition, Nights 5-6 start using traps and saving rifles, Nights 7-8 shorten routes and prep the entrance, Night 9 preserves health and ammo, and Night 10 focuses Yosef's gunmen and guards before committing to the boss.

Quick Tips

  • Do not hold sprint everywhere. Keep stamina in reserve to escape or return before the storm.
  • Treat food, drinks, and medicine as team resources rather than personal loot.
  • Tell teammates which ammunition, medicine, or weapon type you need before scavenging.
  • Enter Night 10 with assigned target priorities, loaded weapons, and stocked supplies.

Pairs with Fearless, Tormented, and Survivor.

Fearless

Defense

Provides extra resistance against close-range and explosive damage. Helps melee agents survive crowded waves and heavy scav attacks.

Decaying Winter Crafting and Blueprints

Scrap is shared indirectly through the equipment your team crafts, so duplicate weapons and low-value loot should be converted into useful gear instead of being left across the map. Expensive weapons should only be crafted when the team has enough ammunition, healing, food, and defensive supplies to support them.

Crafting Tips

  • Pool Scrap around one planned weapon or utility item instead of spending it on several incomplete upgrades.
  • Keep one emergency melee weapon before scrapping duplicates, and save stronger weapons with good reach or perk synergy.
  • Store medical items centrally and use them according to injury severity rather than individual ownership.
  • Save explosives and crowd-control equipment for difficult waves instead of isolated early-night enemies.

Decaying Winter Enemies and Bosses

Enemy difficulty depends on positioning and group composition as much as health or damage. Standard scavengers become dangerous when firearm users, heavy melee units, explosives, and supernatural enemies attack the team at the same time.

Decaying Winter Walkthrough and Endings

The standard Decaying Winter loop alternates between a timed scavenging phase and a safe-zone defense wave. Every night should improve the team's medical supply, food, water, ammunition, scrap, crafted equipment, and ability to survive the next storm.

1

Nights 1-2: Secure Basic Survival

Search the closest low-risk buildings first. Prioritize a usable melee weapon, food, water, bandages, and splints, and return before the storm blocks the safe route. Survive the first waves without spending valuable ammunition.

2

Nights 3-4: Storage, Blueprints, and Firearms

Collect duplicate weapons for scrapping and move shared supplies into organized piles. Expand routes toward more containers, collect firearm ammunition even before the matching gun appears, and decide which weapon the team intends to craft.

3

Nights 5-6: Defense and Scav War

Prepare traps, explosives, gas, decoys, and defensive equipment with separate firing lanes. Conserve high-value ammunition for large groups. If Scav War erupts, observe from cover, let opposing forces reduce each other, and loot only after the area is stable.

4

Nights 7-8: Specialize and Stockpile

Give the strongest melee weapon to the dedicated frontline player and scarce ammunition to the best firearm agent. Use melee, perk abilities, and traps before spending explosives, then craft the team's most important blueprint weapon and load every firearm.

5

Night 9: Final Preparation

Make the final scavenging trip short and focused on missing essentials only. Move all useful equipment into Night 10 positions before the wave begins so every defender starts the final night healthy, supplied, and positioned.

6

Night 10: Survive Yosef's Final Assault

Hold cover and eliminate dangerous ranged scavengers before they surround the team. Use traps and explosives to reduce the supporting wave, then concentrate firearm damage on Yosef when there is a safe firing opportunity. Keep one support player ready to revive or heal.

7

Standard Night 10 Clear

Complete the normal scavenging and defense cycle, survive every required wave through Night 10, and defeat Yosef and the remaining final-wave enemies to finish the standard survival route.

8

Evacuation Ending

Acquire the access item for the restricted underground area, complete its activation sequence to transmit an evacuation signal, and return in time to defend the extraction assault. Surviving agents who reach extraction complete the evacuation outcome.

9

The Last Strandeds Mode

Treat The Last Strandeds as a separate wave-defense mode rather than a standard scavenging run. Choose perks around sustained defense, crowd control, healing, and ammunition efficiency, then spend earned resources on the upgrades that solve the team's current weakness through the final holdout.

Quick Tips

  • Return before the storm and never carry the entire team's food or medicine outside alone.
  • Assign one frontline, one ranged damage, and at least one support or control role before Night 1.
  • Pool Scrap around one planned weapon instead of several incomplete upgrades.
  • Enter Night 10 with loaded firearms, distributed ammunition, explosives, and assigned team positions.
